Flora Evelyn MacQuarrie

Great-great-grandparent – 1 of 16 in this generation

(1857-1953)

Flora was born in Malagawatch, on the island of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Canada. Malagawatch is on the shore of Bras D’or Lake. Cape Breton Island was named the #1 island destination in Canada and the continental US, and the #3 island destination in the world by Travel and Leisure magazine’s 2011 World’s Best Awards. Flora was the 2nd oldest of 8 children born to Neil MacQuarrie and Margaret Matheson. It’s not clear why she emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 33 and married at the “old maid” age of 36 to James Henry Emery.

Flora was often found with her daughter, Mary Matheson (Emery) Collins, either on ship records or in census records. She lived with Mary and Mary’s two young daughters on Palm Boulevard in Warwick, RI. She then lived with her daughter, Henrietta (Collins) Hersey, at 20 Nisbet St., Providence, RI.

At the age of 74, Flora returned from a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, with daughter, Mary, and granddaughter, Maryann Etta Collins. At the age of 80, Flora returned from a trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Curiously, she listed her address at the time as 131 Willow Street, West Roxbury, MA.

Children of James Henry Emery and Flora Evelyn MacQuarrie:

  1. Henrietta E. Emery
  2. Hamilton Blaine Emery
  3. Mary Matheson Emery
  4. James Hildreth Emery

Flora died 22 April 1953 in Providence, Rhode Island and was interred with her husband in Westville Cemetery, Taunton, MA. Click here to view her record on findagrave.com.
