Henry Sherrill

6th great-grandparent – 1 of 256 254 in this generation

(1710-1760)

Henry was born in 1710 in East Hampton, Suffolk, New York, to Recompence Sherrill, 38, and Sarah Parsons, 34.

When Henry was just 2 years old, his mother died on 25 November 1712, in East Hampton at the age of 36. The following year, his father married Margaret Cady when Henry was 3.

At the age of 26, on 1 November 1726, Henry married Jane Conkling at the Presbyterian Church in East Hampton. This marriage produced eight children:

  1. John, b. about 1736 in East Hampton, NY
  2. Lucy, b. about 1739
  3. Sarah, b. about 1741
  4. Mary, b. about 1747
  5. Samuel, b. about 1748
  6. Keziah, b. about 1750
  7. Henry, b.29 Sep 1753
  8. Jane, born in January 1759 in Westbrook, Middlesex, Connecticut

Just a year after his youngest child was born, Henry died in East Hampton, New York, at the age of 50.

Henry Smith, Sr.

7th great-grandparent – 1 of 512 in this generation

(1728/29-1802)

As of this posting, Henry’s ancestry has changed (at least for me!). For decades, we (my great-uncle, Kenneth Smith; my great-grandmother, Marion (Hawkins) Smith; and I) have had the wrong pedigree for Henry.

We had William Henry Smith and Margaret Lloyd as parents. It makes sense that they would not be his parents because their marriage took place on 19 December 1732 and Henry was born in 1728.

A record on longislandgenealogy.com cites several reliable sources for Henry’s [new] parents: Zachariah Smith and Huldah Hand.

Henry was born on 3 Feb 1728/29 in Huntington, Suffolk, New York. On 23 Feb 1752, he married 22-year-old Mary Chichester in Huntington. Their children included Henry Smith, Jr.

Henry built a house at 900 Park Avenue, Huntington which still stands and owned by the Huntington Historical Society.
