Mary Rachel was born on 12 November 1783 in Islip, NY, the daughter of Henry Smith and Ruth Rogers. She married Ebenezer Hawkins on 17 August 1802 in Smithtown, NY and gave birth to Ebenezer, Jr. nine months later. Mary was widowed the same year, when her baby was just a few months old. She remarried to Hezekiah Jennings and had seven more children with him:

  1. Almira Jennings, b. about 1810 Sag Harbor; died as an infant in Sag Harbor on 23 Sep 1811, buried in Oakland Cemetery, Sag Harbor, NY
  2. Mehitable “Hetty” W., b. June 1812 Sag Harbor; married Samuel Augustus Redfield of Clinton, CT on 23 Mar 1837 in Sag Harbor; died 8 Mar 1892 Sag Harbor; buried in Oakland Cemetery, Sag Harbor, NY. Her husband was a descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins of the Mayflower.
  3. Henry Smith, b.1811 Sag Harbor; m. Eliza Cook. Their daughter, Almira Smith Jennings, married James Harvey Doxsee who became famous as the founder of Doxsee Pure Little Neck Clams and Doxsee clam chowder. Henry died on 24 Jan 1885 in Islip, NY and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Bay Shore, NY.
  4. Philander R., b. 11 Feb 1814, m. Lucy Lorinda Gladding of Deep River, CT; d. 14 Jan 1894; Oakland Cemetery, Sag Harbor
  5. David Alden
  6. Elsey S., b. about 1824; d. 22 Mar 1843 at the age of 19; buried in Oakland Cemetery, Sag Harbor
  7. Adeline Ferris
