Ebenezer Hawkins, Jr.

Fourth great-grandparents – 1 of 64 in this generation

Ebenezer was born in 26 May 1803 in Brookhaven, NY. Brookhaven has the largest geographical area of any town in New York State, and the largest population of 10 towns in Suffolk County. It is the only town that stretches from the north shore to the south shore of Long Island. Ebenezer’s father, Ebenezer, Sr., died at sea when young Ebenezer was just four months old. His mother, Mary Rachel Smith, remarried to Hezekiah Jennings around 1809/1810, and had six more children. Ebenezer, Jr. married Hannah Maria Wicks on 7 Nov 1824 when he was 21 and she was a month shy of 15 years old.  He and Hannah had seven children between 1826- 1843. Ebenezer owned and operated a paper mill and was known as a wealthy man. He died on 19 Aug 1888.

Partial Newspaper article, source unknown re Capt. Ebenezer Hawkins (b1803):

“…western mills, however, with improved machinery and plenty of straw available, brought down the prices and so after sixty-five years, work discontinued, and Mr. Hawkins retired from business.

Capt. Hawkins, as he was known, was a man of broad mind and exceptional intelligence.  As a pastime he studied astronomy, and his ability along this line is shown in the drawings and maps made by him.  Seven children, three sons and four daughters were born to Captain and Mrs. Hawkins, of which only two survive.

Philander J. Hawkins married, and continued to live in the old homestead which was then remodeled.  The entire property was purchased by him after his father’s death in 1889, and has been occupied by his family ever since.  Its walls have often echoed with merriment and laughter, but sadness has also been intermingled with joy.  The death of Philander J. Hawkins which occurred in 1893 brought sorrow not only to the house…”
