Grace Annie Bashaw

Great-great-grandparent – 1 of 16 in this generation

(1874 – after 1950)

Grace was born on 5 Aug 1874 in Brandon, Vermont, the only child of Louis Bashaw and Josephine Cross. She spent her early childhood in Brandon, but she and her parents had moved to Chicopee, Massachusetts by 1880, when Grace was 6.

On July 3, 1893, at the age of 18, Grace wed John Frederick Gaylord in Hartford, CT. She would give birth to nine children in 10 years. Her 2nd child, Frederick, died of infant cholera at the age of 8-1/2 months.

In 1907, when Grace was pregnant with her 9th child, her husband died suddenly from appendicitis. Her parents relocated from Chicopee to Springfield, Massachusetts, where she was living, to help care for Grace’s young, grieving family.

They were all still living in Springfield as of the 1910 U.S. Census, but were probably residing in Revere, Massachusetts before 19 Dec 1915, the date of Grace’s father’s death. In the 1920 U.S. Census, Grace was residing with her mother and six of her children in Revere.

Sometime prior to 1928, Grace was remarried to Charles C.  Robinson and the two were living in Middletown, CT. By 1933, they had apparently separated: Charles moved to Hartford and Grace returned to Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1940, however, she was in Queens, NY living with her son Joseph, and his wife, Loretta. In 1950, she was living with Joseph at 321 East 21st St. in the Gramercy Park neighborhood in Manhattan where Joseph was employed as a nurse at nearby NYC Hospital. Mother and son were both identified as widows.
