Eliza Jane was a descendant of Mayflower passengers, Priscilla Mullins and her father, William Mullins; and John Alden.

She was born on 17 September 1802, in Westbrook, Connecticut, to Jedidiah Chapman and Jane Sherrill, who were both 43 years old.

Eliza married Abel Kelsey in nearby Clinton, Connecticut at the age of 23. Eliza died at the age of 42 about eight weeks after her son, Henry Hubbard Kelsey, was born. She was buried in Indian River Cemetery, Clinton.
