Lucy Allen

Fourth great-grandparent – 1 of 64 in this generation

(c.1834-1909)

Lucy was born about 1834 in New York, possibly in Essex County, although a birth record has not been found. Her parents were Louis Allen and Mary Leo, according to her death record. It’s not clear why her daughter’s marriage certificate says that Lucy’s last name was Gardner.

At about the age of 16, Lucy married Joseph Cross, probably in Essex County, NY.

They had four children:

  1. Lucy, b.c1852, appears only in the 1860 U.S. Census
  2. Josephine, b.c1855 Essex Co., NY
  3. Eva, b.c1859 Essex Co., NY, married George Leroy Bixby on 10 December 1880 in Chicopee, Hampden, Massachusetts; resided in Springfield, MA, moved to Revere, MA
  4. Mattie A., b.c1867 Brandon, Rutland, Vermont; married George W. Doucette on 30 August 1888 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts; lived in Revere, MA for many years; died before 1940

They appear together in the following U.S. Censuses: 1850 census in Essex, NY; 1860 in Schroon Lake, NY; and 1870, in Brandon, Rutland, VT.

Lucy’s husband, Joseph, committed suicide by hanging in Chicopee on 13 May 1880. There’s no way to guess what was happening in their lives at this time, but there must have been turmoil and shock.

Lucy appears as a widow in the 1880 Census in Chicopee and in 1900 in Boston, Mass.

Lucy died on 28 September 1909 at her home, 575 Beach Street, Revere, Massachusetts. Her death certificate indicates that she was buried in Holyoke, Massachusetts, but nothing confirms that she was in fact buried there.
