Susanna was born in 1750 in Centre Island, New York, the daughter of Henry Ludlam and Naomi Feke. Centre Island is an island and a village within the town of Oyster Bay, Nassau, New York. The island’s current residents are among Long Island’s elite.

At the age of 21, Susanna married Nathaniel Smith, Jr. and they had at least one child during their marriage. She was widowed at the age of 37.

Susanna may have been a Quaker like other members of her family.

She died sometime after April 1829 and may have been buried in the Ludlam-Smith Burial Ground, Centre Island, NY.
