Joseph Moore

6th great-grandparent – 1 of 256 254 in this generation

(1745-1825)

Joseph was born on 4 April 1745 to Daniel Moore, 36, and Annie Sayre, 39.

Joseph had 17 children by 2 wives. At the age of 21, on 25 September 1766, he married Abigail Fitch in Hampton, Connecticut, and they resided in Sag Harbor, New York. Sag Harbor is a village located within the towns of East Hampton and Southampton, Long Island. They had the following children:

  1. Mary, b.18 October 1767 in Sag Harbor, NY, d.27 November 1770
  2. Elizabeth, b.20 February 1769 in Sag Harbor, NY
  3. Anna, b.27 April 1770 in Sag Harbor
  4. Clarissa, b.21 December 1771 in Sag Harbor
  5. Daniel, b.4 December 1773 in Sag Harbor
  6. Lucy, b.25 April 1775 in Sag Harbor, d.28 April 1775
  7. William Fitch, b.30 April 1776 in Sag Harbor
  8. Joseph, b.24 January 1778 in Canterbury, CT, died bef July 1783
  9. Lucy, b.22 April 1780 in Canterbury, CT
  10. Joseph, b. bef. 6 July 1783 in Canterbury, CT. Bp 6 July 1783.

Joseph was 25 when his daughter, Mary, died at the age of 3 on 27 November 1770.

He was 30 when his daughter, Lucy, was born but lived for just three days.

Deacon Joseph Moore and his family were refugees from Long Island during the American Revolutionary War. They left a “considerable estate” in Bridgehampton (part of Southampton), but were fortunate to escape the British occupation in 1776. They left by ship and eventually settled in Canterbury, Connecticut, which was close to where Joseph’s wife, Abigail, had grown up. They were initially destitute and were exempt from paying taxes. Someone benefited very handsomely from Joseph’s wealth in Bridgehampton, but it wasn’t Joseph. Two of Joseph’s brothers were also refugees from Long Island who settled in Connecticut.

When Joseph was 40, his wife, Abigail, passed away on 5 April 1785, in Canterbury at the age of 39. They had been married 18 years.

Joseph was remarried later that same year, on 2 November 1785, to Hannah Shepard, the daughter of Josiah Shepard and Rebecca Bacon. Joseph and Hannah had seven children:

  1. Abigail Fitch, b.bef 31 December 1786. Bp 31 December 1786.
  2. Ebenezer, in Canterbury, CT
  3. Hiram, in Canterbury, CT
  4. Mary, in Canterbury, CT
  5. Sally, in Canterbury, CT
  6. Esther, in Canterbury, CT
  7. Hannah, in Canterbury, CT
