Smith was born on 12 September 1777 to in Babylon, NY, the son of Silas Muncy and Deborah Wood. His mother died when he was 11 years old. Smith married, at the age of 40, Mary Sammis, the daughter of David Sammis and Deborah Ketcham.

Smith was made famous by the discover of a large amount of gold and silver on the ship, Savannah, that sank near Fire Island. See also wikipedia profile of the ship. The source regarding Smith’s discovery of gold and silver is unknown. More research is needed.

Smith died in Babylon, NY on 2 August 1825 at the age of 47, and was buried in Babylon Rural Cemetery, Babylon.
