During Silas’ lifetime, the first major battle of the Revolutionary War was fought on Long Island on 27 August 1776 and was won by the British. Silas’ two young daughters died just a month after the battle. The seven-year occupation of Long Island was called a “State of Wretchedness,” a term that came from a speech given by General George Washington to the U.S. Army prior to the battle.

Silas died at the age of 70 on 6 January 1814 in Babylon and was buried in Babylon Rural Cemetery.
